White Dogtooth Violet

This is a single-flowering plant originating from a corm with stalks up to 6 inches tall.  Flowering plants have a pair of flat to slightly folded leaves emerging from the base, while the more numerous nonflowering plants produce only single leaves.  The leaves, up to 6 inches long, are mottled with brown and resemble the pattern on a trout,

These have a common name of trout lily. The 3 sepals and 3 petals are similar and curve backwards as the flower ages.

These were seen at the Morton Arboretum, May 2013
