Virginia Bluebell

Virginia Bluebell, Morton Arboretum, Lisle, Illinois

The Latin name is Mertensia.  This species are ideal for rock gardens, others are taller and are suitable for borders and woodland gardens. They pere full sun and moisture retentive soil. All species are fully frost hardy.

Native to the cooler parts of North America, this perennial is one of the prettiest blue spring flowers.

It is effective planted with daffodils, and is seen at its best naturalized in woodlands or alongside streams

It grows to a height and spread of around 18 inches.
