Lae ie Wetland Restoration 11-4-2013

There is a pond behind the Longs Drugs on Keihi  Road where I first saw the Black-necked Stilt.
These birds are about 16 inches tall and both female and males look similar.

They are found in groups, pairs or singly in ponds, marshy areas, and mudflats. They feed on fish, crabs, worms and aquatic insects.  They nest in loose colonies on mudflats closes to water.  The nest is in a shallow depression on the ground.
They are another bird that will feign injury to distract predators from their nest sites and young.

Could be a Hawaiian Coot.  He turned his head to was not able to see what he looks like in the front.

You can see them by a mound in the pond.

Looks like there may be a nest, possibly with young.

I am not sure what this flower is.

Nene
They are the state bird of Hawaii.
Usually you would see them in Upcountry.
This day I saw them at the Laie Wetland Restoration Project grounds. Each time we went passed it, I never saw them again.  It is known as the Hawaiian Goose.

Their breeding season is from November to June. They frequent scrub land, grassland, golf courses, sparsely vegetated slopes and open lowlands.
They were nearly extinct in the wild in 1951, captive-bred birds have been reintroduced since 1957 into Haleakala Crater on Maui and in its former range on Hawaii.

This little area is by the Catholic church on Keihi Road, and Azeka Center.

Muscovey Duck

This white duck decided to follow me wherever I walked.

Hau Tree
It is a true Hibiscus.  It is used for training into arbors as the branches interlock and form a roof overhead.
As the day grows older the flower turns to an apricot color. As they get ready to drop at night, they turn red.

No idea what type of duck.

Mallard, male

The mallard ducks have been imported to the island. These hybridized farm ducks are widespread and frequently hybridize with the endangered Hawaiian duck.
When I went back to see if I could get better pictures of the ducks, you still could not tell what was what.
