Chukar or Alectoris Chukar

This is a common bird on Maui on the slopes of Haleakala.  This bird was introduced to the islands in 1923 from Asia and eastern Europe.

We did see them on our way down from the summit of Haleakala

This is a partridge-like bird and prefers arid, open, rocky areas, from 1,000 to 11,000 feet.  It is often found in large coveys during the non-breeding season.

You can see we are pretty high up on Haleakala when we saw this bird.
