Trillium (Red)

These are part of the Lily family. The plant has smooth stout stem up to 10 inches tall, with 2 leaves at the top. The leaves are oval, rounded or pointed at the tip, rounded at the base, smooth, up to 4 inches long. They are usually mottled on the surface.  A single stemless flower arises just above the leaves to 1 1/2 inches long.  There are 3 purplish-brown petals, point upwards enclosing the 6 stamens.  They bloom from April through May.  They like moist woods and are scattered throughout Illinois.
